Circular reference

Fix the "Circular Reference in Manager Column" Import Error Learn why this error occurs and how to correct it before importing your employee list.

This error means that at least one employee in the Manager column has an invalid reporting relationship.

The most common cause is that an employee has been assigned as their own manager, creating a circular reference. Because this creates an invalid organizational hierarchy, the import cannot be completed.

How to fix the error

Open your Excel file and review the Manager column.

For the affected employee:

  • replace the incorrect manager name with the correct manager;

  • or remove the manager's name if the employee does not report to anyone.

If an employee does not have a manager, it is perfectly acceptable to leave the Manager field blank. During the import, Amélio will automatically place that employee at the top of their reporting hierarchy.

Tip: The names displayed in the import error window indicate the chain of employees where the circular reference was detected.

Read the list to reconstruct the reporting hierarchy and identify where the circular reference begins.

Additional tip: If the error persists, verify that there are no circular reporting relationships anywhere in your employee list. For example, Employee A cannot report to Employee B if Employee B also reports back to Employee A.
